Acoustical Doors Install and Repair

Acoustical doors, also referred to as “acoustical man doors” or “sound-resistant doors”, are specialized doors designed to minimize the transmission of sound between different areas or rooms. They are engineered using high-quality materials and construction techniques to provide amazing sound insulation and noise control. With dense cores, multiple layers, and sealing mechanisms, acoustical doors block unwanted noise to provide privacy, tranquility, and required acoustical conditions in various environments. They are often used in recording studios, concert halls, offices, and residential spaces to create sound barriers and maintain the desired acoustic or privacy of any space.

Acoustical Doors Description

Specialty Doors + Automation provides a full line of standard and custom hollow metal doors for new and retrofit construction projects in the commercial, industrial and institutional markets.

Hollow Metal Doors are made of channel reinforced steel sheets and filled with insulation materials such as polystyrene, kraft honeycomb, or polyurethane. Standard metal doors are 1-3/4″ thick and are prime coat painted. The gray primer finish is suitable for painting.

Hollow Metal Doors are shown to have superior performance for strength and durability compared to the alternate materials. Metal doors are more sanitary, much easier to maintain, and can withstand more abuse than wood or aluminum doors. A result of the strength and durability of steel is that metal doors have the lowest total cost of ownership of any other materials.

Acoustical Door Popular Articles

Noise pollution continues to increasingly become an issue, whether it's the outside city streets, constant hum of machinery, or loud sounds from neighboring rooms or buildings, excessive noise can have a large effect on our health, well-being,and productivity. In noisy environments, acoustical doors have provided a solution for significantly reducing noise transmissions and providing a more quiet and comfortable space. There are a variety of benefits that acoustical doors provide.

Whether it's a bustling office, a recording studio, a concert hall, or a healthcare facility, controlling and minimizing noise is essential for maintaining a peaceful and productive environment. Acoustical doors have become the solution for many organizations to address this noise issue and create a quiet and peaceful environment for individuals in their facilities.

Sound Resistant

Sound-resistant interior and exterior acoustic doors are an ideal cost-effective solution for recording studios, hotels, music rooms, conference rooms, or any space that needs to be sound-resistant. Our pre-hung acoustic doors feature multilayer construction in a variety of wood options suitable for indoor applications or metal for exterior use. If the door itself is not a problem, it could be that sound is leaking through space between to door and the jamb. To solve this problem, we supply a full line of sound-resistant door seal kits and other products to keep noise contained. These standard and adjustable door seals are economical and easy to install.

Our most popular sound blocking door and seal products are listed above. Please contact us today to learn more.

4 Benefits of Acoustical Doors

Superior Sound Control

Acoustical doors are specifically engineered to reduce the amount of sound that travels from one space to another. Unlike standard commercial doors, they use specialized cores, perimeter seals, and door-bottom sealing systems to limit sound transmission. Doors with appropriate STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings can be especially valuable in recording studios, sound stages, theaters, industrial facilities, conference rooms, and other environments where controlling noise is important.

Increased Privacy

One of the biggest benefits of acoustical doors is improved speech and sound privacy. In offices, medical facilities, testing areas, conference rooms, and private workspaces, conversations may need to remain contained within a room. An acoustical door helps reduce voices and other sounds passing through the doorway, creating a more private and controlled environment. When combined with properly designed acoustical walls, ceilings, and seals, the door becomes an important part of the overall sound-isolation system.

Better Working and Production Environments

Excessive noise can interfere with communication, concentration, recording, and production activities. Acoustical doors help separate noisy areas from quieter spaces, allowing different activities to take place within the same facility. For example, an industrial operation may need to isolate loud machinery from offices, while a production studio may need to prevent exterior noise from entering a sound stage. Effective sound isolation can make the overall facility more functional and comfortable for employees, performers, technicians, and visitors.

Specialized Solutions for Large Openings

Acoustical doors aren't limited to traditional personnel-sized doorways. Specialized large acoustical doors, including sound stage and elephant doors, can provide sound control while accommodating oversized equipment, vehicles, scenery, machinery, and production materials. These systems are particularly useful for sound stages, performing arts facilities, aerospace facilities, manufacturing environments, and other buildings requiring very large clear openings. Properly engineered acoustical doors provide the accessibility a facility needs while helping maintain the acoustic separation required between spaces.

STC Ratings and Acoustical Doors

When selecting acoustical doors, one of the most important factors to consider is the Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating. STC is a measurement used to indicate how effectively a building component, such as a wall, window, or door assembly, reduces airborne sound transmission. Generally, a higher STC rating indicates greater resistance to sound passing through the assembly.

For acoustical doors, STC performance is especially important in environments where controlling noise is critical. Recording studios, sound stages, theaters, broadcasting facilities, manufacturing plants, conference rooms, testing laboratories, and other commercial facilities may require specialized doors to help isolate sound between spaces. An acoustical door system can incorporate heavy-duty construction, specialized cores, perimeter seals, automatic door bottoms, and carefully engineered frames to minimize areas where sound can escape.

It is also important to understand that acoustical performance involves the entire door assembly, not simply the door panel. Frames, seals, thresholds, hardware, installation, and surrounding wall construction can all affect real-world sound isolation.

Choosing an appropriate STC-rated acoustical door helps architects, contractors, facility managers, and building owners create spaces with improved noise control, privacy, sound isolation, and acoustic performance.

Industries That Also Benefit From Acoustical Doors

Manufacturing & Industrial Facilities

Manufacturing plants and industrial facilities often operate heavy machinery, compressors, generators, testing equipment, and production systems that generate significant noise. Acoustical doors can help reduce sound transmission between production areas, offices, control rooms, laboratories, and other occupied spaces. Properly designed STC-rated doors can be an important part of an overall noise-control strategy, helping create quieter work environments while allowing facilities to separate loud equipment areas from spaces where communication and concentration are important.

Healthcare and Medical Facilities

Hospitals, medical offices, behavioral health facilities, and diagnostic centers can benefit from acoustical doors where privacy and noise control are priorities. Exam rooms, consultation rooms, treatment areas, mechanical rooms, and specialized testing spaces may require greater sound isolation than conventional doors provide. Acoustical door assemblies can help limit conversations and equipment noise from traveling between rooms, supporting more private and comfortable environments for patients, doctors, nurses, and staff.

Performing Arts and Entertainment Venues

Theaters, concert halls, rehearsal facilities, auditoriums, and performing arts centers frequently need to control sound between adjoining spaces. Acoustical sound doors can help isolate performance areas from lobbies, backstage areas, rehearsal rooms, corridors, and neighboring venues. High-STC door assemblies can reduce unwanted sound transmission and help prevent outside noise from interfering with performances. For facilities where acoustic quality is essential, specialized acoustical doors can complement sound-rated walls and other acoustic treatments to create a more controlled environment.
